Hi
I am making my own shampoo, using your vita nourish base. I have very damaged hair, which is also falling out, due mainly to a great deal of stress. I have been told by the hairdresser that the hair itself is very dry and porous. The shampoo I made has essential oils and Vit E in it and am happy with the results. The shampoo base has gone very thin and watery. Is there something else I can add to make it thick again or do I just live with it. Also wanting to add something else to it to feed the hair - some protien. Would marine collagen be best or should I use something else. Or would I be better adding some of the ingredients to the shampoo and the others to the conditioner??
Thanks so much
Megan

Hi Megan,
Addition of essential oils and Vitamin E is good but would probably suggest the addition of 2% - 5% Panthenol (Vitamin B5) as well. Protein is also good and would probably suggest the 0.5% - 2% silk protein rather than marine collagen (hair is made of keratin protein (similar to silk) while marine collagen is best for skin, which is mostly collagen).
2. Some essential oils can affect the viscosity and we would suggest that you would blend first with equal parts of Coconut DEA then dissolve into the shampoo. If you do this then viscosity may not be affected as much.
Coconut DEA is available through New Directions although not yet on the website (soon). If you place an order we can supply it to you.
Adding essential oils to the conditioner should not affect viscosity (at normal levels) and if it did DO NOT use Coconut DEA to thicken.
3. The question of adding to the shampoo or to the conditioner is best answered by the fact that the shampoo is used to remove materials from hair while the conditioner is used to replace condition in hair. Therefore adding special ingredients to the conditioner (I feel) is more effective - to the extent that lower levels (half that recommended for the shampoo) can be used. Remember to massage the conditioner well into the scalp, leave for 30-60 seconds and then rinse out.
I note that less than half of consumers use a conditioner hence the reason we have determined active levels to add to shampoos.
Also for dry porous hair I would probably suggest shampooing a little less often. Try reducing the frequency by one day at a time (for a two week trial each reduction) to determine the best for the client.

Enjoy making your products.

Hi Megan,
Some essential oils which may help are:
Scalp treatment tonic lotion
lavender 5
patchouli 3
rosemary 5
ylang ylang 2
Using 10 to 15 drops in 250ml, of either of these essential oils or the blend listed above would be suitable.

Hi Nadine,
Thanks so much for all the info.
I have a few questions:
The silk protein - there are 3 of them on the site - is it the amino acid, peptide or the powder that I should use?
The Coconut DEA - what is this? Do I just phone up to do the order rather than the usual via the internet?
The scalp tonic - I am wondering if these oils are to be added to a carrier oil (if so which would be best - I have most of them) or is there something else which would work better?
I will make up some more shampoo with the oils you suggested this week end and use in the mean time.
Thanks again this has been a great help.
