Hi,
I am new to soapmaking and have been viewing your recipes. Can you tell me, and I know it is probably a stupid question, but is the plain soap in the recipe just store bought or do you sell it? Also, could you tell me what the shelf life of some of your other recipes, like the lotions, are? If it is not long, can I add a preservative and if so which one? I ask this because I was thinking of making some products up for friends and family, and I also have another book with recipes in it but they do not contain any preservatives and say that they can only be kept for a few days - but I need them to last longer.
Thanks
Shannon

Hello Shannon,
welcome to the forum. First of all, there are no stupid questions, we all have to start somewhere.
Naturaly made skincare will go rancid in a very quick time, this is because the ingredients in them are all living and bacterior work to break them down. So, if you do not add preservatives, then you can extend shelf life to about 2 weeks by keeping them in the fridge.
Yes, you can add preservative to any of the things you make. Which you choose is up to you and where you stand on the 'natural' issue. Some people will only use grapeseed extract or such things. Others (like myself) will use suttocide. I did use the herbigerm to begin with, but I have a no parabens policy for my business, so that was out. And there is now the new preservatives on the site which are 100% natural, though pricewise, out of my league.
Generally, go with what feels right for you. If you are going to make recipes from books that use food items, then I would suggest possibly usign a little more of the preservative, but that's just my thoughts. In any case, I would make test batches first. My understanding is that the preservatives will add up to 2 years shelf life. I have formulas I made over 6 months ago that are still going fine. Though I have noticed that some items darken a little overtime, but they are still 100% ok.
As for the soap, everything on this website is for sale from the website, and if you live in Sydney, you can visit the factory to pick stuff up. The plain soap in the recipe I would imagine is available from NDA.
I hope this has been helpful for you.
Michelle
