Hi, I tried a perfume recipe over the weekend (for 50 ml) that consisted of combining alcohol (I used v. pure Vodka), distilled water & essential oils. I used Turkey Red oil (4 drops) as a solubilizer. I mixed the components appropriately according to recipe, left for 24 hours & then filtered. It is now a milky substance rather than being clear as most eau de colognes are. Any explanations or ideas? Lynn.

Lynn
Dear Lynn,
when using a solubiliser with oil and alcohol/water in small quantities it always goes cloudy, for some reason when making large quantities this does not occur. Perhaps if you try mixing the essential oils with the alcohol on its own, some e.os are fairly soluble in alcohol. It also is however, dificult to compare to large companies eau de cologne, as many of the constituents are synthetic as the real essential oil is often to expensive and it is difficult to maintain consistency. My suggestion would be to either put it in a coloured or frosted bottle.

JENNA
Thanks Jenna. I will try your suggestions. The main problem with the milkiness is that it sprays onto the skin in a milky consistency which looks a bit weird. What sort of quantity would need to be prepared to avoid the milky reaction? Perhaps less water would also help?

Lynn
I have spoken with our chemist and you may try using more turkey red oil, as more is needed then the solubiliser for it to work. Make sure the essential oil is also thoroughly mixed into the solubiliser / turkey red oil before adding. Please let me know if this works.

JENNA
Thanks. I assume you mean the essential oils should be thoroughly mixed into the TRO before adding? I will keep you posted.

Lynn
hello jenna, i am new, very new to perfurme and new to this forum. but i brave myself to join and get some thoughts out. i did not have problem just like lynn. i have not acquired any scent from you yet but i intend to. i am using the locally available scents which may not be of good quality however, for practice purposes and tries, it may suffice. the problem i have is that after making the entire recipe, the whole thing smell so strong instead of that gentle pleasant desire. what do i do to make the perfume smell pleasant? i am using alcohol as the vehicle.

joey
Hey Joey,
You might want to try and use less essential oil. As a general rule, you should use approx 1 drop to every 2 ml.
Also some essential oils are more pungent then others so you might want to play around with your essential oil and alcohol ratio till you get it right. Remember to dilute your perfume generously.

Hope this helps
