Hi
Can someone please tell me what the 100% natural preservatives, suttocide, neopeine & suprapene are derived from and what is their approximate expected shelf life? Also any suggestions on % of use in creams. Many thanks.

Seeking clarification regarding animal testing on ingredients:

I have been a regular purchaser of your ingredients and have taken at face value your past statements (including postings within this forum) that none of your products are tested on animals. This fact has been another of the reasons why i have chosen you as one of my suppliers.
But I would also like to know whether any of your ingredients are tested on animals. This includes having your ingredients tested by outside sources on behalf of your company.
I ask this in particular reference to your material spec Suttocide R1014-AAO01 as it has LD 50 results on it for oral/inhalation on rats, the dermal toxicity on rabbits and also the LC 50 aquatic toxicity on a range of marine species.
Are these results for tests done on this particular batch of Suttocide? Or are they previously established toxicity reports, and if so when were they done and by whom? (i.e. 1 month ago, 6 months ago, more than 5 years ago and tested by you or another pharmaceutical company). I am in the process of trying to establish cruelty-free certification and need these points clarified as part of my application.
I would greatly apprecaite your response to this and am hoping that these tests were conducted more than 5 years ago.
regards
Lisa

Hello, When I make a natural balm with apricot oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, beeswax and essential oils why does it go beady after a while? The beads still melt on skin contact but it doesn't look very nice in the jar? Any suggestions?

Mica Products. I would like to know that if I wanted to make them into a pressed powder what product would I use and if I wanted to lighten the colour would I just use the pearl white mica? Also what could I use to make a lipstick rather than a lip balm.

I would like to know if NDA have any spray bottles that won't allow perfume to evaporate?
The second question I have is regarding making an 8-month-old baby boy an insect repellent. I was thinking of using floral water and would like to know if that would be alright to apply directly to the baby's skin. If so which floral water would you suggest? Also, would you recommend adding an essential oil and how much?
Thank you!

Hi,

I am new to soapmaking and have been viewing your recipes. Can you tell me, and I know it is probably a stupid question, but is the plain soap in the recipe just store bought or do you sell it? Also, could you tell me what the shelf life of some of your other recipes, like the lotions, are? If it is not long, can I add a preservative and if so which one? I ask this because I was thinking of making some products up for friends and family, and I also have another book with recipes in it but they do not contain any preservatives and say that they can only be kept for a few days - but I need them to last longer.

Thanks
Shannon

I have a general question about your powdered extracts.

I have read that a general rule of thumb when adding Liquid extracts to
products is that they should amount to a combined total of between 1% -5% of total product.

I was just wondering if your powdered extracts are more
potent/concentrated than liquid ones and if the general rule of thumb
above applies when using your powdered extracts.

Thankyou in advance for your help on this.

INFORMATION FOR SELLING PRODUCTS

Every other week someone posts asking for information regarding legalities of selling their products. To make a business out of natural skin care there are two forms of research you must do. 1. Develop your recipes. Work with the oils and other ingredients until you find a formula you are satisfied with.
2. Research the laws and regulations in YOUR COUNTRY.

Many people post asking for assistance, but the laws are not universal. It is pointless asking an Australian company for ideas if you live elsewhere. Not only that, but the laws can differ within the same country.

Nobody can give you a simple, pat answer to this question. You must do this research yourself. Check with local councils or counties. Some places require your kitchen to be approved, others do not.
Find out about trade waste rules, do you need to be cleared for this? Don't know what trade waste is? Use the internet to research it.
Check with local licencing bodies. There must be some government organisation where you are who handles business licencing, so ask them who you need to speak with to find out about the legalities of selling items. Again these laws and regulations vary between countries and states/cities.
What are your responsibilites regarding refunds?
What are your responsibilities regarding labeling?
Do you have to have certification if you plan to make organic-only products? Can you claim skincare as organic? In some countries you cannot legally use the word 'organic' for anything other than food! Check it out.

The other thing you need to think about, is if you are going to sell on the net, which countries will you sell to? Don't think you can find out what is ok where you are and assume that its fine for elsewhere. You may have to pay export taxes in your country and import ones where you send the products to. FIND OUT BEFORE YOU START.

Many people start making skincare as a hobby then want to turn it into a business. Fine. But if its going to be a genuine business, start acting business like! Start doing the research for yourself. At the end of the day, you will be held accountable if you breach legislations and saying "oh but I was told by somebody else it would be ok" is no excuse under the law. At least in Australia, you cannot use ignorance of law to justify not following it! In other words you have to KNOW what the law states and the only way to know that is to find out.

My current perfumery related questions:
How are the fragrance oils used in perfume recipes?
Do they 'blend' well together to create other scents?
Do they 'blend' well with the EO's and absolutes when used in the same blend?
Do the fragrance oils need to be used differently according the the carrier (do you need more / less for oil)?
Is there any basic 'recipes' for traditional perfume blends available(number of drops altogether, etc)?
sorry, have wanted to know these things for sooo long. :c)
Thank you.

Hi there,
Could there be a search engine feature added to the forum for finding threads of common interest? Or maybe there could be an extra area created 'dedicated' to those interested in making up their own fragrances?
I would love to swap info, recipes, tips, etc with other hobby & career perfumers on here and am currently overwhelmed by the task of shifting through 90 threads in miscellaneous.
Thank you.

Hi,

I make body scrubs/body oils/bath oils/body creams etc. for myself at present, but I'm considering turning it into a business and selling them to the general public.

I'd rather not put preservatives in my products and would like to sell them as freshly made as possible, however I think I may have to use preservatives to some extent if I'm to succeed in my business venture. (I'd be mainly web selling) However, I'm having some difficulty in finding information about rules and regulations relating to selling this type of product.

Can you help? I'm UK based.

Hi!

I use some of the toiletry bases as your company policy is "not to use any chemicals or unnatural products" (as per your brochure). However if fragrant oils are added to the bases would this hold true since they are they are synthetic? I would apprciate you feedback on this. Thanks!

Need help
