Hello, I often advise pregnant women which essential oils they should avoid but was asked recently exactly what would happen if they didn't - can you help me out with the correct answer? Many thanks Sylvia

Sylvia
There are certain oils that should be avoided, these ,however, tend to be oils that are not used normally by aromatherapists.
The more toxic essential oils can cause injury or malformation in the development of the foetus and may even cause a miscarriage. This is in the most extreme cases.
Other essential oils such as Geranium and Lavender are considered to have a hormone-like activity, which may unbalance the hormone levels in the body. This last one, however, has not been proven.
My best advice would be to avoid all possibly toxic essential oils, and if you are really keen on the idea of using essential oils refer them to an aromatherapist who specialises in pregnant woman and will perform a full diagnostic session, to make sure that there is no medical history which will affect the use of possibly safe oils.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Jenna - My question was in relation to cosmetic applications and I would therefore assume that the generally acceptable oils are in such minute quantities that they are fine to use. Please correct me if I am wrong, and once again thanks. Cheers Sylvia

Sylvia
The problem with essential oils is that they are very concentrated, and that is why they are only used in very small quantities. But as to the products, there are many pregnant woman who are happy to use them, but it is best to make them aware and let them make up their mind, more than likely they will be fine, but just in case.
